Active Release Technique Q&A

What is Active Release Technique®?

Active Release Technique® (ART) focuses on relaxing overworked muscles and other soft tissues to prevent discomfort and pain.

The hands-on, movement-based soft tissue therapy is beneficial for easing tension in tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, and fascia to restore range of motion. ART can also break up scar tissue that develops in soft tissue due to trauma and overexertion.

Sports Chiro & Rehab offers chiropractic sessions featuring the Active Release Technique for adults and adolescents. The team is certified in ART to ensure your safety and optimal treatment results.

Am I a candidate for Active Release Technique?

You may be a candidate for treatment with the Active Release Technique if you have a musculoskeletal condition that causes frequent muscle spasms or chronic joint pain in the neck, back, shoulders, or hips

Sports Chiro & Rehab offers treatment with the Active Release Technique to address conditions like:

  • Sciatica
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Headaches
  • Tennis elbow
  • Trigger Finger
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome

You may also benefit from the Active Release Technique if you’re an athlete or work a physically demanding job and need relief from pain or movement restrictions related to muscle, ligament, or tendon overuse.

ART treatments can also support a faster recovery from sports-related trauma and potentially lower your risk factors for additional injuries.

What happens during an Active Release Technique session?

The team performs a physical exam, checking for tissue that’s overly tight (trigger points) or tender. They also test the flexibility of tissues and the range of motion in your joints.

When they identify abnormal tissues, your provider uses precise movements to stretch and manipulate them. This involves you moving the affected tissue while your provider presses on the area to release tension and break up scar tissue.

While the treated tissues may initially feel sore, many people experience noticeable pain relief after their first ART session.

You may need a series of treatments to regain mobility in the treatment area. The providers discuss your options for additional sessions based on the nature of your condition and the severity of your symptoms.
