Dry Needling Q&A

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a targeted, hands-on treatment designed to relieve muscle tightness and improve how your body moves.

During a session, your Sports Chiro & Rehab provider uses very thin, sterile needles and places them directly into your tight muscle bands, often called trigger points. The treatment helps your muscles relax, increases blood flow, and gets them working properly again.

Even though dry needling uses needles, it’s not the same as acupuncture. It’s based on how muscles and the body actually work, using modern science.

What issues can dry needling address?

Dry needling is often used when muscle tension, pain, or movement restrictions just won’t go away.

You may benefit from dry needling if you experience:

  • Chronic neck, back, shoulder, or hip pain
  • Muscle knots or trigger points
  • Limited range of motion or stiffness
  • Headaches or jaw tension related to muscle tightness
  • Sports injuries or overuse issues

It can also help if you have pain that keeps returning despite rest, stretching, or other treatments.

Is dry needling painful?

This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is usually no, or only mildly. You may feel a brief pinch as the needle goes in or a quick muscle twitch when the tight area releases.

The sensation is typically short-lived and followed by a feeling of looseness or relief. You may have some soreness afterward, which is normal. It can be similar to how your muscles might feel after a good workout, and it usually fades within a day or two.

What are the benefits of dry needling?

Many people notice positive changes after just one session, especially when the team combines dry needling with other therapies or exercises.

Common benefits include:

  • Reduced muscle tension and pain
  • Improved mobility and flexibility
  • Faster recovery after activity or injury
  • Better muscle activation and movement patterns

Over time, dry needling can help break the cycle of chronic tightness and discomfort, allowing your body to move more efficiently and comfortably. If ongoing muscle pain or stiffness has become a daily issue, dry needling may be the missing piece in your care plan.
